Course Development, Lesson Plans and Classroom Techniques
Planning is what turns what you know into what somebody else can do. An unplanned lesson is a conversation, and a conversation does not reliably produce a pilot.

Why this is a certification subject
Nobody issues a flight instructor certificate for flying well. 14 CFR 61.185 sets the ground training an applicant for an initial flight instructor certificate must receive and log, and three of the six fundamentals-of-instructing subjects it names are course development, lesson planning, and classroom training techniques. Section 61.185(b) relieves an applicant who already holds a flight instructor certificate of that fundamentals-of-instructing training, so the requirement belongs to the initial applicant rather than to everybody. The CFR is the authority and it changes: read the current text of 14 CFR 61.185 rather than trusting any summary, this one included.
The teaching process
Teaching organizes material so a learner can understand it, and it runs in four steps. You prepare — set the objective and gather what you need. You present the new material. The student applies it, doing the thing rather than hearing about it. Then you assess, which tells you whether the presentation worked and what the next lesson has to fix.
Underneath sit four skills every instructor needs: people skills, management skills, subject matter expertise, and assessment skills. Subject matter expertise is the one applicants assume is the whole job. It is one of four.
A course of training, and the words for its parts
A course of training is a series of studies leading to a specific goal — a certificate, a rating, a checkout. A curriculum is the whole set of courses, a syllabus is the sequenced outline of one course, and a lesson plan covers a single instructional period.
Under 14 CFR part 141 the syllabus is not optional: an approved school trains against an approved training course outline. 14 CFR 141.53 covers how a course is approved, 14 CFR 141.55 and the part 141 appendices set out what the outline must contain, and those sections are what you work from — not a paraphrase of them, and not the version that was current when you did your own training. Part 61 imposes no equivalent requirement, so there the only thing holding the training in a logical order is you.
Objectives you can actually grade
A performance-based objective is clear, reasonable, measurable, and repeatable, and it has three parts. The description says what the student will do. The conditions say under what circumstances — which airplane, what reference material, with or without your help. The criteria say how well, and the honest source is the tolerance printed in the ACS for that task, not a number you invent.
A decision-based objective asks for more. Instead of performing a skill to a tolerance, the student decides — diverts, continues, declares — and defends the reasoning. That is where critical thinking gets trained, and it is what scenario work is built around.
Completion standards are those objectives written as a finish line, which is why the ACS matters here. It is the standard for both the knowledge and practical tests, and it ties knowledge and risk management elements to each skill. Write your completion standards in ACS language and nothing on the checkride surprises your student.
Organizing the material
The introduction has three pieces: attention, the story or clip that makes them look up; motivation, the specific reason this material matters to this student; and overview, a short clear statement of the objectives and key ideas. Motivation is the piece most often skipped and the piece that decides whether the rest lands.
The development is the main body, arranged one of four ways: past to present, simple to complex, known to unknown, or most frequently used to least frequently used. Pick one and hold it; switching halfway through is what makes a briefing feel like it is wandering. The conclusion retraces the important elements and relates them back to the objective you stated at the start. New material does not belong there.
How you deliver it
The lecture is efficient with time and good for general understanding. Prepare it by establishing objectives, researching, and organizing. It can be delivered four ways — read from a script, recited from memory, spoken extemporaneously from an outline, or impromptu with no preparation at all. The Aviation Instructor's Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9B) favors the extemporaneous one: an outline holds the material in order while leaving you free to watch the student and change course when the watching tells you to.
The discussion method opens with a short lecture and moves to questions, instructor to student and student to student. The guided discussion is the same shape but depends on students already knowing something, and lives or dies on your questions. The handbook names the types, and the distinctions are finer than they look — the fundamentals of instructing knowledge test asks about them, so learn them the way FAA-H-8083-9B defines them:
- Lead-off — opens the discussion
- Follow-up — keeps it moving
- Overhead — put to the whole group rather than to anyone in particular
- Rhetorical — asked to prompt thought and then answered by you, not by the group
- Direct — aimed at one named person
- Reverse — hands a student's question back to that same student
- Relay — hands a student's question to the group
An effective question is purposeful, clear, contains a single idea, stimulates thought, requires a definite answer, and relates to the material at hand. A question with two ideas in it gets you an answer to neither.
Electronic learning covers simulation and computer-based work — in flight training, mostly the BATD or AATD in the corner of the school. The demonstration-performance method is the one for any skill requiring practice, and it has five elements:
- Explanation
- Instructor demonstration
- Student performance
- Instructor supervision
- Evaluation
Explanation comes first and evaluation last, but do not read the middle as a queue: the handbook has student performance and instructor supervision happening at the same time. The student flies it while you watch, and the watching is the teaching.
Drill and practice is repetition carried far enough that the action becomes automatic. Integrated flight instruction means introducing every maneuver with both outside and instrument references from the first time the student flies it, which builds the cross-check habit early and gives a student who blunders into cloud something to hold on to while turning back out. Teach the limit in the same breath: the Airplane Flying Handbook is explicit that integrated instruction does not make a VFR-only pilot competent to fly in instrument conditions, and a student who takes it that way has learned the wrong lesson from a good technique.
Instructional aids
An aid clarifies the relationship between objects and ideas, helps a learner remember, and can bring in more than one sense. The order of work matters: establish the objective, gather and organize the material, and only then decide which ideas need visual support. The options are ordinary — a marker board, printed handouts, video and computer learning, models, mockups or cutaways. Use them to carry key points, not as a crutch. A lesson built around a slide deck is a slide deck with a person next to it.
Problem-based instruction
Problem-based learning uses real situations because they are more relatable than abstractions. Scenario-based training gives the student a realistic situation that forces decisions drawing on several areas of knowledge at once. Collaborative problem solving puts a group on the problem. A case study takes a real event and critiques what the people in it did.
A case worth teaching from here is the emergency landing on Interstate 15 at Payson, Utah, in December 2024. It works for reasons worth copying: it is recent, it is local enough that the students have driven that road, and the useful part is the sequence of decisions rather than the outcome. Stop the story at each branch and ask what the student would have done. Before you teach any case, pull the accident record and check the facts — dates, aircraft, sequence — and give the students the report number so they can read it themselves. A case study earns its place when it carries the message you meant to convey and the facts hold up; otherwise it is an accident report read aloud.
Planning the whole course
The Aviation Instructor's Handbook describes the training syllabus as the tool used to make sure training happens in a logical sequence and that all requirements are completed and properly documented. Note the second half. The syllabus is a guide and must stay flexible — weather and airplanes will rearrange it — but the documentation obligation does not flex.
Content is sequenced in blocks of learning: small units mastered separately, then assembled into larger ones. Ground lessons work the cognitive domain. Flight lessons work the psychomotor and affective domains together, because attitude and judgment are being trained whether or not you planned to train them. Risk management belongs in the syllabus explicitly, written into the lessons where the decisions actually happen. Build it from the knowledge and risk management elements the ACS lists task by task, and check your syllabus against the current ACS rather than against whatever list was in circulation when you learned to fly.
The lesson plan itself
A lesson plan is an organized outline for a single instructional period — a guide for you, not a script to be read at the student. A usable one has seven characteristics:
- Unity — one coherent whole
- Content — enough material to meet the objective
- Scope — as much as fits the period, and no more
- Practicality — teachable with the resources you have
- Flexibility — survives a ceiling that came down
- Relation to a course of training — it fits where it sits
- Instructional steps — preparation, presentation, application and assessment, written down
Scope is where most plans fail: two hours of material goes into a one-hour slot, the conclusion gets cut, and the student leaves without the tie-back that makes it stick.
Where you meet it next
On the CFI practical test you present a lesson from a plan you wrote, and the examiner assesses the plan as much as the presentation — the objective, the completion standards, and whether you can teach from your own outline without reading it. It sits next to the rest of the instructing track. The learning process supplies the reason the four steps are in that order; human behavior and communication is where the motivation piece of your introduction comes from; assessment and testing picks up at the fourth step, where you find out whether any of this worked.
