Night Operations

Night flying does not change the airplane. It changes you — which cells in your eye you are seeing with, how far away you think that light is, and whether there is a horizon at all.

Why night is its own subject

The airplane makes the same power after dark, stalls at the same angle of attack, and burns fuel at the same rate. What moves is everything you fly it with: the cues you judge height and distance from thin out, the horizon can disappear entirely, and a trip you would call routine at two in the afternoon starts to resemble instrument flying — more time believing the panel, less believing the view. That is why night carries a body of technique of its own instead of a paragraph appended to everything else.

Three definitions of night

The FAA uses the word three ways and they do not line up. Each one lives in its own section, so cite the section rather than the habit, and read the current 14 CFR — the regulations are the authority and they change.

Read 61.57(b) itself before you lean on it. It conditions carrying passengers at night on three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop within the preceding 90 days, flown "as the sole manipulator of the flight controls" of an aircraft "of the same category, class, and type (if a type rating is required)," during that one-hour window. The type clause matters and is easy to drop from memory; the section text is what governs. Currency is a legal floor and not a statement about your skill: three stop-and-goes eighty-nine days ago makes you legal to take your family up tonight, and whether it makes you ready is a separate question.

What your eye is doing after dark

Cones are packed into the center of the retina, at the fovea, and give you color, sharp detail and distance judgment — but they need light. Rods sit off to the sides, see no color or fine detail, and are far more sensitive to dim light and to motion. At night you fly on rods, so the center of your vision — exactly where you point your eyes — becomes a functional blind spot, and the airplane you look straight at can be the one you cannot see. The fix is off-center viewing: scan in short steps and look slightly to the side of whatever you want to resolve.

Cones adapt in a few minutes. Rods take about 30 minutes to reach full dark adaptation, and you can lose it instantly to one white flashlight or floodlight. So carry a red flashlight as well as a white one, dim the panel and any tablet as low as you can still read them, and if you must use white light, close one eye to keep half your adaptation. Rods are also among the first tissues to suffer from a shortage of oxygen, which is why the AIM recommends supplemental oxygen at night well below the altitudes at which 14 CFR 91.211 requires it. Fatigue, alcohol, tobacco and a head cold degrade night vision further, and if yours deteriorates in flight, treat that as a reason to land.

Equipment: yours and the airplane's

Your own kit is short and unglamorous. A charged tablet with the charts already downloaded, because you cannot troubleshoot a failed download in a dark cockpit. White and red flashlights with spare batteries. Water and something to eat. And an honest answer to whether you feel ready to fly.

For the airplane, 14 CFR 91.205(c) adds a night list on top of the day VFR equipment: approved position lights, an approved aviation red or aviation white anti-collision light system, one electric landing light if the aircraft is operated for hire, an adequate source of electrical energy for all installed electrical and radio equipment, and one spare set of fuses — or three spare fuses of each kind required — accessible to the pilot in flight. The anti-collision requirement at night is a general one: 91.205(c)(3) states it for all U.S.-registered civil aircraft, with no exception carved out for older airframes, though the section does let a flight continue to a stop where repairs can be made if a light of the system fails. The March 11, 1996 date you may have heard attached to anti-collision lights belongs to the day VFR list at 91.205(b)(11), where the requirement reaches only small civil airplanes certificated after that date under part 23. It is a day rule about which airplanes must carry the system, not a night exemption, and treating it as one is how a pilot talks themselves into launching after dark without a light the night list requires. If something on the list is broken, the question is what 14 CFR 91.213 permits, read with the aircraft's minimum equipment list or Kinds of Operations Equipment List, its type certificate data sheet and any airworthiness directives — and only then whether you are comfortable going.

The airport at night

Under 14 CFR 91.209, position lights burn from sunset to sunrise, and 91.209(b) applies to an aircraft "equipped with an anti-collision light system," which must be lighted whenever the aircraft is operated — though the same paragraph lets the pilot in command turn the lights off when leaving them on would be contrary to safety, as in cloud or fog where the flash bounces back at you. Otherwise use lights to announce yourself: beacon on before the starter turns, everything on for takeoff and landing, landing light off while holding short so you are not blinding the airplane on final.

Taxi slowly, with the airport diagram up before you move rather than while you are moving. Runway incursions are a night specialty: the signs are the same signs, but the geometry is harder to read, and lining up on a taxiway or the wrong runway is genuinely possible. Taxiway edge lights are blue, taxiway centerlines green. Runway edge lights are white; on an instrument runway the last stretch changes to yellow as a caution zone, and the length of that zone is the last 2,000 feet or half the runway length, whichever is less — so on a short instrument runway the yellow starts at midfield, not 2,000 feet from the end. Where lighting is pilot controlled, key the microphone before you need it. A rotating beacon identifies the field, white and green for a civil land airport — and in Class B, C, D and E surface areas, a beacon running in daylight often means visibility below 3 statute miles or a ceiling below 1,000 feet, though it is a hint rather than a rule and not something to plan around.

All you get of another airplane is a few colored points: red on its left wing, green on its right, white at the tail. Work the geometry from its wings, not from yours. An airplane pointed at you has its left wing on your right, so green on your left and red on your right is the one coming toward you — red on the right, something is not right. The other arrangement, red on your left and green on your right, is an airplane heading away in roughly your direction, and a lone white light is a tail you are overtaking. Brightening lights are closing and dimming lights are opening, which is the cue worth taking, because the eye is bad at judging range on a point source.

Illusions, and what settles them

With no horizon and few references, your visual system starts filling in. Autokinesis makes a single fixed light appear to wander if you stare at it, so keep the scan moving. A false horizon — a sloping cloud bank, a slanted line of street lighting, a star field over black water — is something you will cheerfully bank to match. Flicker vertigo from a strobe pulsing off cloud can produce nausea and disorientation. The black hole approach — a lit runway with nothing but darkness in front of it — pulls pilots into a shallow, low final and into whatever is short of the threshold. Featureless terrain makes you feel high; bright runway lights make you feel close, dim ones far.

You do not out-think an illusion in the moment, you expect it. Fly the pattern by the altimeter more deliberately than you would by day, cross-check attitude, heading and vertical speed on the panel, and let the VASI or PAPI be the authority on your glidepath. Trust the instruments over your senses; on final, trust the visual glideslope over both. If the picture stops making sense, go around.

Weather, terrain, and the quiet engine

You cannot see a cloud at night until you are in it, so the clues are indirect: a narrow temperature/dewpoint spread on the METAR, a halo around ground lights, your strobes reflecting back, ground features disappearing beneath you. A cloud base estimate from the spread helps, and personal minimums should go up at night rather than stay put. Large dark areas — a lake, a stretch of unlit desert — take the horizon away entirely. Terrain is the hazard you will not see coming, so fly with the sectional's maximum elevation figures in mind and hold the minimum safe altitudes of 14 CFR 91.119.

If something breaks, the order does not change but the workload does: holding the airplane steady takes real attention when there is nothing outside to hold it against. Maintain control, analyze the situation, take the proper action, land when able — a step or two of the checklist, back to flying, another step or two. For an engine failure, work airspeed, best landing area, checklist, distress call — and take best glide from your POH rather than from a number carried over from another airplane. Turn toward an airport if one is in reach. If not, the Airplane Flying Handbook's advice is to head for a dark area, since dark usually means unobstructed, and to favor a spot near public access so help can reach you.

Night operations is a knowledge task on the private, commercial and instructor ACS, and an examiner can ask any part of it on the ground: the three definitions of night, the 91.205(c) night list, which way that traffic is going. Expect the currency-versus-proficiency question, because it separates a memorized answer from a considered one, and expect to be asked for the section number rather than the gist.

In the airplane, the habits show up as instrument flying: the scan you build at night is the one you will formalize on the instrument rating, which is why night hours make the first time under the hood feel familiar rather than foreign.
