Short-Field Approach and Landing

A short runway does not forgive a landing that arrives fast, floats, and touches down long. This is the landing that puts the airplane on a point named before the approach and stops it in the distance you actually have.

Why this landing exists

St. Barthélemy is the famous picture — an approach over a hill onto a strip that ends at a beach — but you do not need the Caribbean to need this skill. A grass field with trees off the end, equipment parked in the touchdown zone, a land and hold short clearance that leaves you two thirds of a long runway: all of them hand you less pavement than the airport advertises. That last one comes with a condition. LAHSO is accepted at the pilot in command's discretion, and the AIM is explicit that student pilots should not participate in it, so for most of your training the correct answer to that clearance is unable. And when the runway is already short, look at what is off the far end. Power lines, trees and rising ground are what you would have to climb over if this landing goes wrong and you go around.

What the maneuver is asking of you

The Airplane Flying Handbook puts it as precise, positive control of descent rate and airspeed: enough to clear an obstacle on the way in, land with little or no float, and stop in the shortest distance the airplane is capable of. Every piece of the technique serves one of those three.

Touching down exactly where you planned is what buys you the whole runway. Land four hundred feet long on three thousand feet of usable surface and you have given away more than a tenth of it before the wheels touched. That is why the tolerance is asymmetric: the ACS allows 200 feet beyond a specified point for the private certificate and 100 feet for the commercial, and nothing at all on the short side. On a practical test that point is normally named by the evaluator rather than chosen by you, which removes the option of quietly moving it once the approach is already long.

Before you fly it: know the number

Ask on the ground whether the airplane can do it. The landing distance charts in your AFM answer that, and the approach speed for the short field procedure comes from the same book — aircraft-specific, and it moves with weight. Where the manufacturer publishes no figure, the handbook's fallback is 1.3 VS0. Do not carry a speed you learned in a different airplane into this one.

Then adjust for what the chart assumed. Moisture, dirt, grass or a downhill slope all lengthen the rollout. Heat and elevation lengthen it too: a high density altitude means a higher true airspeed at the same indicated approach speed, and more energy to get rid of. A tailwind bites hardest, stretching the float and the rollout at once — the component that felt trivial on a two-mile runway is not trivial here. Get the wind from ATIS, AWOS or ASOS before you are in the pattern, and think about gusts, shear and wake turbulence before short final.

Flying the approach

The pattern is your normal pattern flown with more room. Turning a slightly wider base is technique rather than anything the handbook requires, but it buys the thing that matters: the airplane configured, trimmed and stable with time left on final, not still chasing the checklist at three hundred feet. Finish the before-landing items abeam your touchdown point and brief the go-around. Flaps go in on the schedule your POH gives for a short field — both the setting and the point at which the last increment comes in belong to the manufacturer, and some airplanes and some instructors hold that increment until the landing is assured over the obstacle. Be at your final approach speed as you roll out.

From there, fly it stabilized. The working method on final is power for the glidepath, pitch for the airspeed, but treat that as the primary technique rather than a law: the handbook describes pitch and power as interrelated controls that you adjust together, and a change to one asks for a change to the other. A short field approach is usually steeper than a normal one because it has to clear something, and a steep path at a low airspeed is the least forgiving place in the pattern. Fly it stabilized or do not fly it.

Your aim point and your touchdown point are not the same place. The airplane travels some distance through the round out even when it is flown correctly, so the wheels arrive a little beyond the spot you were aiming at, and that gap is the part you control by getting the speed right. The aim point still has an unmovable floor under it: it has to sit on usable surface beyond the threshold, and the path to it has to clear the obstacle. Aiming short of that is how undershoots into trees, terrain and the near threshold happen, and the standard allows nothing on the short side in any case. Set the aim point inside those limits and let the round out carry you the rest of the way.

Hold the centerline with your usual crosswind technique — crab and kick it out, or lower the upwind wing and hold the nose straight with rudder — and if the crosswind component demands real correction, establish it early rather than at fifty feet.

Keep corrections small near the ground. Abrupt maneuvering at low altitude and low airspeed is where stall-spin accidents come from; the fix for a bad approach is never a large control input, it is a go-around. Pick a gate on final, name it before you fly, and if you are not stable there, leave.

Reduce power to arrive on the point, idle when the point is assured, and round out over your aim point. If the speed was right there is almost nothing to wait through.

Touchdown and rollout

Touch down at minimum controllable airspeed — the wing should be finished flying, not still carrying you. The rollout is the other half of the maneuver, and the half most people fly lazily:

  1. Relax the back pressure smoothly so the nosewheel comes down and the wheels take normal weight. Braking works on the weight you put through the tires.
  2. Brake progressively up to the maximum the tires will hold without skidding. A sliding wheel stops you worse than a rolling one.
  3. Retract the flaps if your POH calls for it, which spoils the remaining lift and puts still more weight on the wheels. Look at what your hand is on — the gear handle lives nearby, and this is not the moment to guess.
  4. Hold aileron into the wind and keep it straight with rudder all the way to taxi speed.

Stopping is not finishing — runway incursions catch people who just came off a hard piece of concentrating.

What goes wrong

Almost every bad short field landing traces back to airspeed. Too fast and the airplane floats, and every foot of float is a foot you no longer have to stop in. Too slow and you arrive with nothing left to flare with. A stabilized approach at the published speed removes both.

The rest cluster around timing. Leaving no room on final forces a steep, high-sink approach you then have to arrest. Seeing a glidepath deviation and waiting turns a small power change into a large one. Chopping the power early in the round out drops the airplane on. And after touchdown, braking hard enough to skid and braking so gently that you use runway you needed both come from never deciding how much runway this landing would take.

The last error is the one that matters most: failing to recognize an approach that cannot be completed safely. That one you can always fix. Go around.

Where you meet it next

This is an ACS task on both the private and commercial practical tests, and the commercial standard halves the tolerance rather than changing the technique — the evaluator names a point, and the airplane is expected to arrive on it. It pairs with the short field takeoff, which asks the same question about the other end of the runway, and it sits on top of the normal approach and landing, which is where the speed control and the centerline work come from. The go-around is its exit and belongs in the same brief every time you fly it. Further on it feeds the power-off 180, where you put the airplane on a point with no power left to adjust the glidepath.
