Straight-and-Level Flight

Straight-and-level is not a maneuver you perform so much as the state everything else departs from and returns to. Fly it well and you have learned what the airplane feels like when nothing is wrong.

Why it comes first

A climb is level flight with a different pitch attitude and more power. A turn is level flight with the wings banked and back pressure holding the nose where it was. A traffic pattern is a handful of attitude changes strung together, and what you do between them is hold an attitude. Cruise and cross-country navigation are level flight held for a long stretch while your attention is somewhere else, and a good deal of instrument flying is the same thing with the horizon taken away.

Learn the correct picture and the correct control pressures now, and a deviation announces itself to you before an instrument has finished moving. That early warning is the reason this task comes first. Everything after it is built on an attitude you can hold while you think about something else.

What straight and what level actually mean

Straight is a constant heading with the wings level. Level is a constant altitude. You set cruise power from your POH and leave it alone, and the airspeed settles where that power and that attitude put it.

Neither one is something you set once and then have. The air is not still, so straight-and-level is a continuous succession of small corrections — bumps, wind shifts, fuel burning off. Flying it well does not mean the needles never move. It means they never get far, because you caught each one early and pushed it back with a pressure rather than a shove.

Attitude flying, and the reference you pick

You fly this by looking outside. Pick a point where the cowling cuts the horizon and learn it as the level-flight picture, then use the wingtips against the horizon to tell you the wings are level. Peripheral vision does most of that work, noticing the horizon tilt before you consciously look at it.

That reference point belongs to your eye position, not to the airplane. Change your seat height or how far forward you sit and the picture you memorized last flight becomes a lie. Set the seat the same way every time and the reference stays honest.

The instruments are the second half of the same skill. Cross-check the attitude indicator, altimeter, airspeed indicator, heading indicator and vertical speed to confirm what the horizon already told you, and go back outside. Your attention belongs outside the window, and the scan is a series of short glances rather than a place to settle. Instruments confirm; they do not lead. The habit you are building now is the one that keeps working when the horizon disappears.

Flying it

  1. Set cruise power per your POH and leave the throttle there.
  2. Set the level pitch attitude against the horizon, using your cowling reference.
  3. Level the wings with coordinated aileron and rudder, and keep the ball centered.
  4. Trim off the control pressure.
  5. Rest your fingers on the yoke and let the airplane fly.

Altitude is corrected with pitch. A small deviation comes back with a light pressure and no power change. If you find you have to hold a noticeably nose-high or nose-low attitude to stay level, the power setting is what needs adjusting, not your arm.

Heading is corrected with coordinated aileron and rudder. A heading that wanders steadily usually means a wing is low, and the fix is to roll the wings level — aileron to pick the wing up, rudder going with it to keep the airplane coordinated through the roll — rather than steering the nose around with rudder alone. Holding a wing down and feeding in opposite rudder to hold the nose straight leaves you flying sideways through the air: slow, uncomfortable, and hard to unlearn.

That cross-controlled combination, aileron one way and rudder the other, is worth naming plainly the first time you meet it. At cruise altitude it is mostly inefficiency. Slow, low and turning — classically an overshoot from base to final, corrected with bottom rudder because the pilot does not want to bank any further — it is the setup for a cross-control stall, which rolls toward the low wing quickly and at an altitude that leaves nothing to recover in. The condition is one you will see demonstrated by an instructor, at a safe altitude and with the airplane set up for it; it is not something to explore on your own. What keeps you out of it is exactly what you are practicing here: wings level, ball centered, both feet doing their share.

Trim holds it; it does not establish it

Trim relieves control pressure so you can stop holding the airplane. It is not a way of changing attitude. Establish the attitude with the controls, hold it steady, then trim the pressure to zero. Every time you set a new pitch attitude, it gets a new trim setting.

A trimmed airplane holds level flight nearly by itself, and that is the point: the attention you were spending on the yoke becomes attention for looking outside, navigating, and noticing traffic. An untrimmed airplane taxes you for the whole flight.

What goes wrong

Overcontrolling is the big one, and it usually starts with the grip. A tight palm on the yoke deadens your hand, so you cannot feel what the airplane is telling you and you make inputs by the fistful. Use your fingers. If it feels like you are fighting the airplane, most of what you are fighting is your own last input — you moved, the airplane had not responded yet, so you moved again. Make one small input and wait for it.

Chasing the instruments is the same error indoors. A traditional vertical speed indicator lags behind the airplane by a few seconds, so a pilot who flies it directly ends up pitching up and down behind an airplane that was already level. Instantaneous VSIs and the vertical speed tapes on glass displays respond far more promptly, which removes the lag but not the habit: the needle or the tape still tells you what the airplane has already done. Fly the attitude and let the instruments report on it.

The other failure is late correction. A deviation you accept for thirty seconds is a deviation you now have to fix with a large control input, which starts the whole cycle over. Small and timely beats large and late every time.

Risk, and looking outside

Straight-and-level is where task saturation shows up, because it is the phase where you are also folding a chart, tuning a radio, or working out a groundspeed. When it starts coming apart, the order is aviate, navigate, communicate. Level the wings, confirm the power, get the airplane doing nothing wrong again, and only then go back to the other job.

The same head-down time is what makes traffic a real risk in cruise. Clear the area with clearing turns before you maneuver, and keep a systematic outside scan rather than a stare fixed on one patch of sky. Traffic displays and advisories are a genuine help, but they show only the aircraft that are transmitting. See-and-avoid is still yours.

Where you meet it next

You are graded on it directly under the hood — straight-and-level flight is its own task in the basic instrument maneuvers section of the ACS, flown to the altitude, heading and airspeed tolerances printed there. But you are really graded on it in every other task on the ride, because slow flight, steep turns, stalls and ground reference maneuvers all begin and end in level flight, and each one is judged partly on how cleanly you got back to it.

The cross-controlled condition returns in the stall and spin awareness lessons, where you will see with an instructor what it does when the airplane is slow. The trim habit returns on your first long cross-country, where the workload is not the flying but everything else, and the pilot who trimmed properly has room for it.
